\nAs a recent transplant to New York, one of the major warnings I received from those who have lived, worked or visited the city was \u201cwatch out for the people.\u201d Keep your eyes down, learn how to navigate the city streets and subway platforms, don\u2019t bother with the \u201cpleases\u201d and \u201cthank-yous\u201d your parents taught you, and don\u2019t even think about expecting a door held open for you. I\u2019ve lived here for close to a year now, and all I can say is, what is wrong with you people? I have had virtually nothing but great experiences with the \u201caverage\u201d New Yorker, and I find them to be friendly, open, helpful and charismatic (did I say friendly? I\u2019m a native Canadian so I know what I\u2019m talking about here). Barring the inevitable jostle or rude comment that will occur in a city of eight million people, I think New York City\u2019s reputation of rudeness needs to be put to rest. Maybe it\u2019s the rest of the country that has a chip on its shoulder?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
